sketch book stuff. top one's lifted from zee moleskin. generally just more of being creepy and drawing unsuspecting members of the public. little skateboard man's got me itching to go down to south bank or wherever and do some sketches of people turning tricks.

bottom one's a possibly abandoned drawing. for the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONGEST time, i've wanted to try and make a collection of illustrations based on songs but finding the time to do totally self serving art is something of a herculanian task. that one was going to be for amanda palmer's astronaut but i got about half way through and was all like.... too emo? there are some loose thumbnails for version 0.2 which feature 90% more explosions. that's always a good thing, right?

i turned up traaaaaaagically early for a flight on friday which meant some long overdue quality time with the mole skin. gosh, krispy kremes are rather good, aren't they?

cross posting this to the doodle-caboodle since this month's mouth watering topic is food.

the folk who run the illustration department's magazine, meow, managed to land themselves some funding which means the up coming issue's going TO BE IN COLOUR. massive kudos to them! i cannot wait to see what people have done for this one.

mmm-MMM! the inside of cereal boxes are wonderful to draw on and take ink washes really well. colours done in photoshop. i'm digging the combination. i think this is something i'm going to have to look into.

stuff for our sketchblog, check it out! it's oozing with arty goodness. if you want to become a contributor, drop me an email at

i never noticed before what big hands the statue of liberty has. all the better for wrestling king kong with?

that said, those mighty dukes didn't do her much good against the cloverfield monster....

oooooooooold sketch book stuff. stuff on the top right was done while watching 'i've loved you so long', hence the rather sad kristin scott thomas. wow. drawing during subtitled movies is not a bright idea.

random tabs are for bowie's 'life on mars' on the ukulele. that stuff's been in my moleskin for just shy of a year and i STILL haven't got around to even trying to learn it. shame on me.

more life drawings from last month or something.

i find a lot of the time i'm asking myself what fletcher sibthorp would do.

cover spread for the new york editorial project.

this one was a lot of fun. the article we were illustrating had a really weird angle. our besotted protagonist spent most of it trying to get through administration and red tape to get an interview with new york herself. when he finally gets to talk to her, he realises that she's transformed into a cold hearted, man-eater of a monster monster (or maybe she always was and he had the rose tinted glasses on a wee bit too tight). with this, i wanted to try and get down the apprehension he develops towards her while depicting her as this soulless seductress and good lord this is getting wanky.

and it sounds like our mysterious neighbour who just moved in next door has got himself a piano. he's pretty good.

life drawings. our totally wonderful life drawing teacher ( has been telling us to pin up our life drawings for yonks. i'd failed miserably at getting round to this herculanian task so decided to throw 'em up on the blog and god damn it, he was right. just briefly looking at them in photoshop has given me a couple of ideas for what to try in the next session.

shame i only did it four lessons before the end of the academic year. bravo alex, bravo.

(3/3 of the new york editorial project)
i spy with my little eye something beginning with MELODRAMA. gosh, this is angst-tasic. why everyone in new york is styling themselves on dr manhattan is totally beyond me.

in other news, went to see the tigerlillies last week.

we totally went on impulse and bought tickets at the last minuet. i'm still pretty amazed we managed to land any since that was supposedly their only london show this year. it was kinda like what would happen if the league of gentlemen folk decided to to turn their hand to writing macabre cabaret-style show tunes complete with theramins, musical saws and wonderfully shit panto-esque antics.

here's one of their more upbeat tunes:

more new york!

Monday, 15 March 2010

...eww. tarting this one up did it no favours whatsoever and the colouring itself is pretty slap-dash. need to start thinking about doing colour studies before blundering into these things. who knows, they could be the best friend you never knew you had.

the article was all about this guy coming back to new york and realising that it maaaaaaaaybe wasn't the city he fell in love with all those years ago. i thought it might be fun to set it up as the guy getting increasingly more disillusioned as he's stood up on a series of dates. tutor pointed out that it looked a little too comic-booky though and i'm not going to argue. that is a trap that needs to be avoided.

going to throw up the colour versions of the editorial project pieces. i would have looooooooooved to be able to spend a little more time on these but deadline said no. as such, i'm going to have to ask you to try your darn-dest to ignore that delicious plastic grass.

on the topic of new york, that's the theme of our first sketch jam over at our shiny new art blog: if you want in on the fun, drop me an email over at!

it's pretty cool underneath the brooklyn bridge. the whole thing seems to have been converted into one big o'l skate park and when we went, there were some folks trying to do what looked like an impromptu fashion shoot. i would have doodled/snapped it but people were getting pretty naked.

hoy hoy!

stuff from new york. we'd just stumbled off the plane when these were done so these are pretty.... loose. it was also trying it's darndest to rain which resulted in some pretty funky bleeding on the page.

that city always seems to have super fun ad campaigns going on. last time i went, the place was plastered with all those viral posters for true blood advocating equal rights for vampires. this time round there were all these bills that seemed to be pimping some help line for zombies, werewolves and all sorts of other nasties that go bump in the night which was super niffty.

god, that place is tall.

whoar. new york was pretty bitching. we were only there for three days (which is sooooooooo not enough) and got up to all sorts of delightfully touristy things. there's a shit-ton of sketch book stuff to put up here so no doubt we'll be working through that during the next couple of months.

in the mean time, really, really, REALLY old stuff. i'm only doing this because it means putting off writing about freud at six in the morning.

the theme for this month's meow is pets. fuck ponies, this little girl's got the right idea!
